Hello all, recently I've started playing my friend's electric guitar. It's so awesome, I'd really like one for myself. Now my problem is, I know absolutly NOTHING about guitars, so I don't know what's a good brand/price etc. I'm on a tight budget though, and I want to start out with a cheap set(so it's not a big loss when I totally hate it in the first weeks already) (including amp, carrying bag(not necessary), plectrums etc) so I don't have to go through too much of a hassle. Keep in mind I'm a total newb at playing guitar though, so treat me like someone who's never even held a guitar before.

Agreed - Epiphones in particular are very good guitars for a very good price. Grab the SG and make like Angus

Great advice, really, but even though these are such incredibly nice and remarkably low priced, I'd still advise against any beginner from purchasing an electric guitar to start with as they are more expensive.

Instead i'd suggest an acoustic, although you can't get the fancy squiddly-dos out of it that you can hear easily when playing an electric, acoustics are remarkably cheap and yamaha offers a superb starter pack with an acoustic that's of a rather great quality.

Plus seriously, you may think that the guitar gets the chicks, true, but the acoustic guitar gets them faster. Also easier to learn on acoustic imo.

I personally bought a version of this starter pack that yamaha offers over 8 years ago, and though the booklets and such inside have changed and been updated, the guitar itself is still the same, and my guitar has lasted alot, still in beautiful condition and it HAS taken some abuse over the years, but it'll always have a special place next to my bass and electric seeing as it's where i started at

Acoustic is better if you're just starting off, and Yamaha offers a remarkably cheap price for what you get. Also, when you want to consider upgrading and if you still want to stick with acoustic, the Seagull S6 is just under $300 and is hands down the best bargain guitar you will ever find. It's sound competes with much higher priced acoustics, and although it might seem a little pricey at first, do consider it. It's certainly a sound investment.

if u plan on takin lessons...
i'd suggest gettin ur teacher to recommend u

between acoustic vs electric

acoustic is good for beginners as its cheaper, and easier to play on at first, etc

but if ur very dedicated
i'd go wit electric, if thats teh style of music ur gonna play

different guitars r suited to different play styles
and while yes, they r interchangeable to a degree
i think u'd much enjoy playin on teh instrument that is catered for ur style of music

I started on an acoustic I borrowed from a coworker for 6 months, best choice I could have ever made. It's more difficult to learn on, but once you get it, moving to electric feels like hax.

Thanks for the advice all.

I'm not gonna get a teacher, I'm going to self teach myself with books and internet. I'll probably exclusively play Rock music when I get the hang of the guitar. I'm on a pretty tight budget so buying an acousitc guitar first is kinda painful to my budget...

Another thing, this guitar has only (?) 22 frets. Is that a bad thing or just right for beginners?
